An t-Eas Stapach (the Stepped Falls) is a waterfall located within the spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge in the Scottish Highlands. The name, which is Gaelic, directly translates to “the stepped falls,” accurately describing its appearance.
An t-Eas Stapach is highlighted as a great place to experience the unique geology of the reserve. The waterfalls in the gorge occur where layers of rock are more resistant to erosion. The gorge itself was not carved by the current river, but is thought to have been cut by a powerful river flowing beneath a glacier during the Ice Age.
While the more famous Falls of Measach can be viewed from the historic Victorian suspension bridge, An t-Eas Stapach, is very accessible as it is right next to the pathway. An t-Eas Stapach offers a different perspective on the gorges’ geology and natural beauty, thanks to the recent track improvements at the site.
