Landscape Photography is a powerful way to show off the Scotland’s beauty, but it could become its’ greatest threat. We have to remember that the internet is a two-edged sword. While we love sharing our passion, “instant connectivity” is putting our favourite photo locations at risk as can be seen along the NC 500 where they are easily identified by the flattening of roadside verges or cars parked in ‘passing places’ and 3 metre wide ‘paths’.
Around Glen Coe and nearby Glen Etive the “Skyfall” effect attracts huge numbers of professional and amateur photographers as is easily seen by the amount of crushed verges, litter and, ‘poo bags’. People must realize that staying on paved areas is fine, but trampling through the forest floor or Highlands peatlands causes real damage.
The Cost of the Shot
- Foot Traffic: The cumulative weight of the “horde” on fragile ground.
- Ecosystem Disruption: Disturbing the natural balance of the landscape.
- Long-term Scarring: Muddy footprints that can ruin a scene for years or generations.
