LumaticLAB Relight (POC)

LumaticLAB Relight, is a browser-based proof of concept application that allows users to apply simulated two-dimensional coloured lighting effects to photographs.

Operating entirely offline, the software enables creators to adjust up to three distinct light sources by modifying their intensity, diffusion, colour temperature, and depth, while also managing custom image imports and alternative background surrounds. Unlike the Adobe beta, Users can preserve their configurations by storing or reloading up to 100 lighting presets within a browser list or by exporting them as portable JSON backups into whatever logical groups the User considers worthwhile.

LumaticLAB Relight’s non-destructive, offline-first engineering demonstrates how smart, minimal web utility design can deliver fast, private editing directly in the browser. By ditching cloud dependencies and heavy processing, it sets a clean, efficient standard AND Lower costs.

Modern browser photo editing often relies on heavy cloud servers, but LumaticLAB Relight (POC) takes a radically different path. Operating entirely within a local HTML file, this lightweight tool offers instant offline photo relighting. Behind its impressive visual results lies a deceptively simple engineering approach that redefines standard browser-based image manipulation.

Pure 2D Math, Not 3D AI Magic

Simple gradients replace complex rendering engines. Despite generating convincing lighting shifts, the application uses no 3D geometry, spatial depth models, masks, or object-aware shadows. Instead, it relies on shared radial glows, screen blending, and uniform 2D opacity shifts over black. As the official documentation notes:

“Lighting is a two-dimensional coloured-glow simulation. It does not infer geometry, surface orientation, materials, occlusion or realistic cast shadows.”

This 2D gradient approach prioritizes raw execution speed and light display predictability over heavy computing power.

2. True Offline Privacy—Your Photos Never Touch a Server

Your data stays strictly on your local device. LumaticLAB Relight achieves its zero-network architecture by embedding CSS, JavaScript, local icon glyphs, and sample JPEGs directly as data URLs inside a single HTML file. Custom JPEG or PNG imports (up to 20 MB) are processed entirely locally without analytics, remote asset fetches, or cloud uploads—with an optional external YouTube guide being the sole internet dependency.

3. Lightweight JSON Presets Decoupled from Photo Data

Portable lighting setups without heavy pixel bloat. Saving a lighting setup creates a tiny JSON file validated on import against a strict 100,000-byte limit. It stores light coordinates, Kelvin temperatures, diffusion, and color hex codes while omitting image pixels entirely. Unlike Adobe Relight – This allows users to build reusable lighting styles across entirely different custom photographs without inflating file sizes or risking privacy leaks.

Conclusion

LumaticLAB Relight’s non-destructive, offline-first engineering demonstrates how smart, minimal web utility design can deliver fast, private editing directly in the browser. By ditching cloud dependencies and heavy processing, it sets a clean, efficient standard.
